I-190 Cumberland Flyover

Retaining Wall Design

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Delta provided structural engineering design of concrete retaining walls, which support the Cumberland flyover bridge ramps.

The overall Cumberland Flyover Project included the following construction and improvements:

  • New flyover bridge from the eastbound Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) consisting of four spans (approximately 845-feet long) crossing the CTA Blue Line and eastbound I-190
  • Four retaining walls located east and west of the flyover bridge structure
  • New eastbound collector-distributor roadway exiting to southbound Cumberland Avenue from eastbound I-90
  • Proposed drainage, high-mast tower lighting, conventional roadway lighting, CCTV camera towers, landscaping, pavement markings and signing
  • Resurfacing of eastbound mainline I-90 from I-190 to west of Cumberland Avenue
  • Reconstruction and widening of eastbound I-190 from the Des Plaines River to the I-190 / I-90 merge

This project collaboration between CDOT, IDOT, and Tollway provides the following benefits:

  • Reduced congestion and travel times
  • Enhanced safety
  • Lower operations and maintenance costs
  • Improved geometric and interchange design

DELTA STRUCTURAL DESIGN

The bridge approach retaining walls were designed as cast-in-place concrete to resist soil, vehicular live load, and lateral crash impact loading. Retaining wall foundations incorporate concrete-filled, metal shell piles and have a maximum soil retained height of 19’-6”. Aesthetic treatment is accounted for by means of a form liner. Combined length of walls is 1,094’-7”.
