PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Delta provided mechanical engineering design services for HVAC improvements to Evanston’s Police/Fire Headquarters (HQ) building. This project was a part of RFP 19-22 which included two other Evanston facilities: Fire Station #3 and Levy Senior Center.
Delta was engineer of record for the Police/Fire HQ.
The Police/Fire HQ building, built in 1949, originally served as a court house prior to its conversion into a police station in 1980.
- The Fire HQ has offices for administrative officers and a training/meeting room.
- The Police HQ has offices for records and general administration, a 911 Center, a 311 Center, and a cell block.
EXISTING CONDITION ASSESSMENT
The facility is heated with three hot water boilers and cooled with two chillers and nine air handling units (AHU) with hot and cold coils for air distribution.
AHU #1, located in the basement and serving the first floor, was installed prior to 2002 and required replacement due to inefficiencies and significant frequency of repairs.
Delta investigated the existing air handling units proposed for replacement and reviewed the unit size and capacities in terms of heating, cooling and supply fan motor horsepower.
HVAC DESIGN
The new AHU is a VAV system with 13,420 CFM capacity. This design was compatible with the Siemens building automation system.
Deliverables included plans, specifications, and cost estimates. Delta also provided bidding, negotiation, and construction phase support services.
PROJECT CHALLENGES
Design for the new AHU unit was required to fit in the existing units footprint. The final design met this criteria while maintaining output capacity.
