PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Delta provided electrical engineering services for the design of decorative street lighting. The project brought streetscape improvements on Broadway (Gunnison Street to Wilson Avenue) and on Lawrence Avenue (Broadway to Winthrop Avenue). Design was subject to Complete Street’s Chicago guidelines.
This project was completed in two phases:
- Phsae I – Broadway (Gunnison to Leland) and Lawrence Avenue (Broadway to Winthrop); new pedestrian plaza at the intersection of Broadway and Racine, as well as flexible street improvements on Clifton between Lawrence and Broadway
- Phase II – Broadway (Leland to Wilson) in coordination with the CTA improvements at the Red Line Wilson Station
STREETSCAPE LIGHTING DESIGN
Delta’s lighting design was for the entire site covering both Broadway and Lawrence Avenue. Proposed fixtures included LED teardrop luminaires (with gateway poles) and acorn LED luminaires for pedestrian pathway to replace HPS luminaire. Photometric calculations were performed with the new LED luminaires to achieve the lighting levels as recommended in CDOT design guidelines.
Several lighting options were explored in coordination with existing conditions such as driveways, canopies, sidewalks, vaults, manholes and side streets. The approved layouts satisfied the existing conditions:
- Broadway: opposite side layout was recommended with nominal pole spacing of 125 feet. Acorn luminaires were provided in-between gateway poles for pedestrians.
- Lawrence Avenue: staggered pole layout with gateway poles were provided at nominal spacing of 125 feet and no pedestrian luminaires.
- Clifton Avenue: one side mounted, double Acorn luminaire was provided.
