PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Delta contributed civil and electrical engineering services as part of a joint venture team for the relocation of the Union Pacific Railroad, Bensenville Ditch and Irving Park Road. As part of the O’Hare Modernization Program, Irving Park Road (York Rd to Seymour Ave) was relocated to geometric conflict with upcoming Runway 10R-28 L construction.
The MOT design maintained two lanes of traffic during all stages of construction on existing Irving Park Road and maintained access to Cargo Access Road which serves cargo facilities and post office. The MOT design was broken into three stages of construction.
- Stage 1: proposed pavement for Irving Park Rd was constructed
- Stage 2A: temporary pavements were constructed
- Stage 2B: traffic was diverted to Taft Avenue and Cargo Access Road and on existing Irving Park Road to construct the remainder of the roadway
Drainage design services included:
- Storm sewer inlet spacing along 1.75 miles of the relocated Irving Park
Road and portions of Taft Avenue and South Access Road - Cross culverts at Access Tunnel Road to convey the flow in the ditches
- Erosion and sedimentation control in accordance to NPDES for the proposed embankments, culverts, and inlets
- Temporary and final relocation of utilities
Delta prepared Phase II traffic signal plans for two intersections: Irving Park Road & South Access Road, and Irving Park Road & Taft Avenue.
Lighting from York Road to Taft Road was provided per IDOT and CDA requirements. Aluminum poles (30’ high, 12’ mast arm) with 400W metal halide luminaire were used. Height of poles complies with FAA Part 77 requirements. Underpass lighting with 100 W metal halide luminaire was provided for UPRR Bridge.
