PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Delta was the lead mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineer to facilitate the improvements for the historic English Building built in 1905.
The overall scope of work consisted of roof replacement, window replacement, tuckpointing, classroom renovation, and new AV technology upgrades to seven classrooms (121,012 square feet total).
MECHANICAL DESIGN
The mechanical systems underwent a complete overhaul requiring demolition of existing controls, ductwork and piping to interface with new equipment. Work areas included all floors from basement through to the rooftop for the affected classrooms and courtyard spaces.
Mechanical systems upgrades involved the partial removal of the distributed heat pump system and associated roof-mounted cooling tower to accommodate a new customized roof-mounted Air Handling Unit (AHU). A connection was added from the building to the existing campus 14” chilled water (CW) system loop which now serves the CW water heat exchanger and the CW water coil at the AHU.
The HVAC capabilities of the removed heat pumps were replaced with Variable Air Volume (VAV) unit with variable frequency drives to serve the renovated classrooms. Additional capabilities include CW cooling, hot water heating, and an economizer mode.
Heating hot water pumps were installed to circulate water between the new hot water heat exchangers and heating coils at the air handling unit and classroom reheat coils.
Delta also provided design of a direct digital control (DDC) system for the new HVAC system.
PLUMBING & FIRE PROTECTION
Plumbing design incorporated new roof drains, piping, hangers, and demolition of 1st and 2nd floor existing piping to accommodate the new design.
Fire protection design required the demolition and replacement of sprinkler heads in the basement and 1st floor areas.
ELECTRICAL DESIGN
Classrooms featured new lighting, occupany sensors and low-voltage power receptacles for AV equipment. A snowmelt system utilizing a heat trace cable was added to the exterior rooftop gutters and downspouts.
A new power panel was added for the AHU and all existing panels were modified to accommodate all modernization including HVAC equipment, AV technology and the snow-melt system.
